Poblacht na mBeaumont! History in Mr Wilson's 5th
28th Apr 2024
We continued our module of "Politics, conflict and Society" this week when we learned about the 1916 Rising on its 108th anniversary and created our own modern 'proclamations' for an Ireland we would like to see for the next 100 years.
Our module began all the way back in the Renaissance where we looked at a change in people's thinking and questioning about the world and their lives. This then led onto The Enlightenment, and the Age of Revolution!
For our study of 1916, we looked at the reasons behind it, looking back earlier in the year when we learned about the Plantations of Ireland. We looked at the Act of Union, and what that meant for Ireland's politics, and we looked at the Home Rule Movement that was halted by the First World War.
We studied the main events of the 1916 Rising, and its leaders. We learned the very sad story of Joseph Plunkett and Grace Gifford, and the song 'Grace' based on their love story.
To conclude our lesson, we analysed a modern translation of the Irish Proclamation, read by Pádraig Pearse on the steps of the GPO. We split into groups to each analyse a focused part, and feed back to our classmates. The girls did a brilliant job of interpreting what was meant in each line.
We then wrote a draft of our own personal proclamations inspired by Poblacht na hÉireann and began to type them up. We will 'tea stain' them next week to make them feel just like the real ones!
