Making St Brigids crosses in Mr Wilson's 5th Class

The girls in Mr Wilson's 5th class had a very busy start to their week this week! 
As it is St Brigid's Day on Thursday, we were learning about her role in Irish history and spiritual identity. We learned about some of the important moments from the story of St Brigid and how she lived her life through God. We also learned about the popular symbols of St Brigid, such as her cloak, and of course her cross! 

Mr Wilson went to his 'secret stash' of reeds and brought in lots for us to make our very own St Brigid's crosses. We began by sorting the reeds to determine what was useful, and what we would need to discard.

We then trimmed the reeds to the correct usable size, and began the delicate folding process to create the beautiful designs on the crosses. 

It took lots of concentration, and many failures, but we never gave up and some girls even made 3 crosses that they were going to give to their family and friends as presents. 

A St Brigids Cross is usually displayed on, or above the door of a house or business, and on St Brigids Day, St Brigid will bless the house to keep it free from evil, fire, and hunger. Traditionally, the cross from the previous year would be burned and the new one would be put in its place. After lunch, we shared our new cross-making skills with Ms McCarthy's 1st and 2nd Class. They were super learners and they made amazing crosses too!!
