Making St Brigids Crosses in 4th Class

6th Feb 2025

This week, Mr. Wilson’s 4th class marked St. Brigid’s Day with a wonderful hands-on activity—making traditional St. Brigid’s Crosses out of reeds. We all thoroughly enjoyed this creative and meaningful celebration of Ireland’s beloved patroness.

St. Brigid’s Cross is closely associated with St. Brigid of Kildare, who is known for her kindness, generosity, and deep connection to nature. According to legend, Brigid wove the first cross from rushes while comforting a dying chieftain, explaining the Christian message as she worked. Today, these crosses are traditionally placed in homes as a symbol of protection and blessing for the year ahead.

In preparation for the activity, the class learned about St. Brigid’s life, her role in Irish history, and the traditions surrounding her feast day on February 1st. The students then carefully followed step-by-step instructions to weave their own St. Brigid’s Crosses, working together and helping one another master the technique.

The finished crosses were proudly displayed in the classroom and taken home by the students to share with their families. It was a fantastic way to celebrate Ireland’s rich heritage and engage in a tradition that has been passed down through generations.
