4th Class Sets Sail with Kensuke’s Kingdom!
This week, our 4th class embarked on an exciting literary adventure with Michael Morpurgo’s classic novel, Kensuke’s Kingdom. From the very start, the students were hooked by the promise of mystery, survival, and discovery!
Setting the Scene
Before diving into the story, we gathered around to explore the cover and blurb of the book. Students shared their thoughts on the vivid illustrations and intriguing hints provided by the title and summary. Questions filled the air:
•Who is Kensuke?
•Why is there a boy on a desert island?
•How did he get there, and what will happen next?
Using the prediction strategy, we worked together to make educated guesses about the story’s plot, characters, and themes. The students showcased their imagination and critical thinking skills, jotting down predictions that we’ll revisit as we progress through the novel.
Choosing Their Reading Style
Understanding that every reader has their preferences, we offered students a choice for how they’d like to experience the story:
•The digital e-book: Some students opted for the interactive features of reading on an iPad, loving the bright screen and adjustable fonts.
•The softcover book: Others chose the tactile experience of holding a physical book, flipping through its pages, and smelling that “new book” scent.
The classroom buzzed with excitement as the students made their selections and got ready to read in the way that suited them best!

We’ve only just begun our adventure, but already the students are curious about what lies ahead. Over the coming weeks, we’ll explore Michael’s incredible journey in depth, using comprehension strategies like questioning, visualizing, and summarizing to understand the story.
